Group Research Assignment
Overview
Each team will be assigned an NTSB accident report. The team will prepare a paper and
presentation related to the specific accident assigned. This assignment is more than a simple
report about the accident. The expectation is that the teams will apply concepts learned in
class to the events that led and contributed to the accident. The paper and presentation should
include basic information about the accident, but the main focus should be on concepts that we
learned in class. Grading rubrics are provided in D2L for both the paper and the presentation and
should be referenced to help guide teams in the preparations for both the paper and presentation.
Collaborative Research Paper
Each team of 3 students shall complete an in-depth case study of an aviation accident that will be
randomly assigned to you. The styling guide to be used is American Psychological Association
(APA) 7th ed. format. This paper is graded on accuracy, completeness of information, spelling,
grammar, APA formatting, and references. The paper shall be typewritten, double-spaced, oneinch margins, and 12-point font of either Times New Roman or Arial. A minimum of three
quality references must be utilized, cited in-text correctly, and listed on the reference page. A
title page and reference page are required. An abstract page is not required. The minimum
word count is 1250 and maximum is 1500. To receive full credit, the body text must reside
within this range.
All three student names should be present on the title page, listed alphabetically (per APA).
Only one student needs to submit the paper into the D2L Dropbox by Friday November 10th
(11/10) by 11:59 pm. The paper should be submitted in .doc or .docx format. Please do not use
PDF or Mac Pages formatting. Each team member will receive the same grade for the paper. The
paper counts for 65% of the total group project grade.
Collaborative Presentation
Each team will prepare a 15 to 17-minute presentation on their research topic to share their
findings. It is expected a visual aid shall be used and teams properly rehearse and prepare for the
presentation. In the event a video is used, videos should not exceed 4 minutes in length.
Presentations will begin on 11/22 and run until complete. Be prepared to answer questions from
the professor and your peers. Each team member will receive the same grade for the
presentation. The presentation counts for 25% of the total group project grade.
Team Evaluations
After a group presents, each team member will be asked to submit a team evaluation through the
Dropbox in D2L. This will provide an opportunity for feedback and constructive criticism on
team member performance and contributions. More guidance is provided in the Dropbox. The
score you receive from your team members will count as 10% of the total group project grade.
Research Paper Specifics:
•
Must follow APA guidelines. Reference: APA manual, 7th Edition
•
If there are no in-text citations throughout the entire paper and/or no
reference page it will result in automatic failure for the assignment
•
Title page + 1250-1500 words of content + Reference page
•
At least 3 quality references – must be scholarly references such as journals,
books, and similar sources other than websites. These 3 scholarly references may
be online format.
•
12 font, Times New Roman or Arial, 1-inch margins, double spaced.
•
Try to summarize and paraphrase more than direct quotes. In other words, strive
to not use direct quotes. Direct quotes should only be used if there is absolutely
no way of rewording the source (extremely rare!).
•
Do not use Wikipedia as a source!
•
Do NOT use Chat GPT or any AI tools
•
Do not simply cite the NTSB accidents throughout your paper. You may integrate
relevant accidents/incidents by summarizing the key points and tying it into your
paper.
•
Plagiarism (to include the use of AI) results in failure of the course. See Syllabus
for specifics.
