Task: AS1 Assessment: Portfolio
Rationale:
In your future careers in Business or Finance, it is very likely that you will be asked to
contribute to or write reports. The main aim of this module is to equip you with the
skills necessary to produce a cohesive piece of writing, focussing on appropriate
organisation and use of language.
In order to develop these skills, we will take you through the different stages in the
process of planning drafting and writing the report. Each step will help you to:
 Understand and adhere to instructions in the assessment brief
 Search for, evaluate and analyse relevant information and data
 Write for a specific/specialist audience
 Structure and present material in a logical and coherent way
 Develop and deploy language appropriate to the Report genre
 Draw a set of conclusions based on evidence and from analysis of the
information gathered at the research stage
 Make relevant recommendations as appropriate
 Provide complete and correct in-text and end-text references.
Structure
The assessment on this module will comprise 4 separate tasks, the first three of which
will inform the final main task, the Business Report.
In this module we will take you through the process of writing a report. You will be
asked to submit each of the first 3 tasks at fixed points during the module. You will
receive feedback on these tasks, indicating how you need to develop your work
subsequently. Please note that each of these tasks will be graded on the first
submission and will contribute to your overall grade.
However, for the final Report, you will be able to submit a draft prior to the final
submission, for which you will receive formative feedback.
Briefly, the Portfolio tasks are as follows:
1. Title Analysis – (10%)
You will analyse 3 Report titles & provide a brief statement of what you understand &
how you would approach them. (300 words)
2. Notes/Reading Matrix – (20%)
Read 3 Company Sustainability Reports (at least 2 UK-based firms – you can have one
firm based elsewhere) and some external, independent sources i.e., NGOs, articles
from the Financial Press and academic articles.
From your reading, choose 2 Sustainability reports, 2 academic articles and 2 other
sources i.e., NGO report, Financial Press article. You will have to fill in a Reading Matrix
(below), which involves full references, a short summary of the main points, how each
text relates to the other texts and your thoughts on the text, your critical comments.
(1200-1500 words)
2
3. Extended, Detailed Report Plan – (20%)
You will produce a detailed, extended plan which will include the main points to be
made in the Report together with academic references. Your plan should be in bullet
points, not full sentences and cover all your report structure. (600 – 800 words)
You will receive individual tutorials for this assessment. As part of this discussion, you
will be asked to justify your choices i.e., explain why you chose a particular
source, explain and show why your assumptions / claims are true, give more detailed
information on how you will used your sources in your report. This discussion will
support your mark for this task.
4. Report – (50%)
Report Title:
“It is widely agreed that to avoid the potentially catastrophic effects of
climate change,
the world needs to attain carbon zero emissions by 2050.” Write a report in
which you
outline the role that Multinational Corporations can and should play in
meeting this challenge.
In your report you should consider the following –

What have MNCs done to meet the challenges posed by Climate Change?
To what extent have these measures been successful?
What more do MNCs need to do?
How likely is that MNCs will carry out the required measures by 2050?
You MUST select at least two UK MNCs. You can choose one non-UK MNC.
You should select 6-8 sources (at least 75% of these sources MUST be English
language). Where possible, you should try to use NELSON. Your sources will include:
o
o
company sustainability reports
independent sources, e.g. financial press (McKinsey, Economist, FT), academic
journals, NGO websites / reports
If your sources are not reliable, you could lose marks. You should use the CRAAP
criteria to help you with your selection.
(1800 – 2000 words)

views?

outcome has been met, and is used as a standard benchmark so that all assignments
are marked equally against. Please see the grading rubric on NILE, or see the final
page of this document for further details of the criteria against which you will be
assessed, presented in the grading rubric.
