Every time Joe was asked to open a history book in school, he would whine and say, “I hate history” and argue with the teacher about “needing to learn this stuff.” The teacher would eventually send Joe to the principal’s office, where he would remain until the next activity started. Joe’s whining during history increased throughout the school year, and he was always sent to the principal’s office.

1-In this scenario, Joe shows us what a classic case of elopement can be. He can get out of the lesson by arguing with the teacher, knowing he will be sent to the office without participating. The antecedent in this scenario would be Joe being told to open his history book. The behavior that follows would be Joe throwing a fit and arguing. Finally, the consequence would be that Joe would not have to participate in that lesson. This is negative reinforcement, and it is the primary form of data collection called the ABCs of ABA. This was taught in my RBT classes as well.

2-Behavior analysts avoid mentalistic explanations because they focus on observable and measurable behaviors over internal, subjective states. Mentalistic explanations involve speculation about thoughts or feelings, making them hard to objectively study. For example, instead of attributing a child’s tantrum to an emotional state or “being sad”, behavior analysts would examine environmental factors such as reinforcement contingencies or the presence of specific triggers!
3-A time that I have used an environmental explanation to analyze my own behavior is when I am at home and I randomly start singing a children’s song that one of my client’s from work perseverates on. I definitely don’t enjoy listening to or singing the children songs my client listens to, but I’ve analyzed that I find myself randomly humming or singing them at home because since I hear the songs so much at work, the songs transferred to my home life.
