An Analysis of Heavenly Chocolates’ Online Consumers
Introduction
Heavenly Chocolates, a company manufacturing and selling quality chocolate products at its
plant and retail store located in New York, is looking into developing a report on its online shop,
which was developed two years ago. The aim is to develop an inferential analysis into providing a
basis on which to develop strategies to further increase its sales from its online shop. Using 50
Heavenly Chocolate transactions selected from the previous month’s sales as the sample, this report
firstly categorises and describes the variables in the method section, followed by providing descriptive
statistics and correlations of variables. At the end of the report, conclusion and recommendations are
drawn based on the analysis.
Methodology
Sample
The data set provided for this report consists of a sample of 50 Heavenly Chocolate transactions
randomly selected from the previous month’s sales. The data is cross-sectional as it is without regard
to differences in time.
Data and variable
Information about the day of the week each transaction was made, the type of browser the
customer used, the time spent on the website, the number of website pages viewed, and the amount
spent by each of the 50 customers is collected. Anderson et al. (2011, p.19) explains that variables are
characteristics of interest in reference to the elements. Overall the data set consists of 50 observations
and 250 measurements. Table 1 displays the variables of interest, their classification and their scale of
measurement.

Descriptive statistics
1
The descriptive statistic table 2 shows that on average, online consumers spent $68.1 every day
purchasing the chocolate. At the same time, the coefficient variation is 0.47, i.e., the standard
deviation of amount spent is about 0.47 of the mean. Distributions with a coefficient of variation to be
less than 1 are considered to be low-variance (Asimow & Maxwell, 2015). Such a coefficient
variation of 0.47 hence suggests a low variance of the amount spent by the consumers online. Hence,
we may have a safe expectation of the consumers’ spending per day. Moreover, table 2 also shows an
average consumer spent 12.8 hours per day on line and viewed 4.8 pages.

Figure 1 shows the number of consumers using different types of browsers. More than half of the
consumers use Microsoft Edge to browse the website. There are also some consumers using Apple
Safari or Google Chrome. Such results imply that if company would like to improve the online
purchasing experience for consumers or develop more functions for their website, they’d better start
from Microsoft Edge as this will help them grab the greatest number of the consumers.

Correlation analysis
To understand how the consumers’ online habits correlate with consumers’ online spending, we
calculated the correlation coefficient between two features of consumers’ online behaviors and their
online spending. Scatter plots figure 2 and figure 3 were firstly developed to show there is a positive
relationship between time spent online and online spending, as well as page viewed and the online
spending.

Table 4 shows the correlation between time spent online and amount spent. It shows the two
variables are positively related at a moderate level 0.58. It might be that those people spending more
time surfing internet are more likely to make purchase from online shops. This is reasonable in that
those tech-savvy people are probably well versed of the online shopping platform and have high
confidence about online shopping.

Table 5 shows the correlation between pages viewed and amount spent. A correlation coefficient
between Page Viewed and Amount Spent is 0.72, suggesting that the two variables are highly related
in a positive way. It might be that those people surfing more internet pages are more likely to spend
on online shops. This could be attributed to two reasons. First, in that those tech-savvy people are
probably well versed of the online shopping platform and have high confidence about online
shopping. Second, they might be also purchasing online from other websites. Hence, it might help the
4
sales if the company can figure out other important online platform or webpages that the consumers
are interested in and put its ad on those webpages.

Conclusion and Recommendation
This report has provided descriptive statistics and correlations of variables. It is found that
sampled consumers tend to spend more on Friday and Saturday, while less on other days.
Accordingly, recommendation can be given to the company that to further increase the online sale,
more promotional effort such as discount can be provided on other days of the week.
Secondly, most of the sample consumers are using internet explorer. Therefore, if company
would like to improve the online purchasing experience for consumers or develop more functions for
their website but with a tight budget, they’d better start from internet explorer as this will help them
grab the most number of the consumers.
Lastly, it is found that there is also moderate to high correlation between time spent online, pages
viewed and online spending. Such results imply that it might help the sales if the company can figure
out other important online platform or webpages that the consumers are interested in and put its ad on
those webpages. Thus, consumers spending time on those allied websites will be exposed to the
promotional message of the company, which might trigger their purchasing intention and behavior.

The start of my career in an asset management firm
You have recently completed a Bachelor of Business degree through the College of Business,
Law and Governance at James Cook University (JCU) and have been appointed as a junior
member in an asset management firm in Singapore. This is your first full-time position, and
you are on probation for three months. You feel a little anxious, but you are keen to make
an excellent impression to secure your position.
It is Monday morning of your second week in the position. On arrival, your boss calls you
into her office. Before she hands over some project to you, your boss wants to understand
how familiar you are with statistical knowledge and skills. She gives you a dataset of 2000
stocks listed in the U.S. market. The data contain the firm and stock information in a month.
You need to utilise your statistical knowledge to describe and summarise the data. More
importantly, you need to identify the factors affecting stock returns and give your
recommendations for investors in the U.S. stock market. Your boss asks you to complete the
report within three days.
More specifically, she asks you to:
1. Randomly select 300 companies from the given data set and do the following analyses
based on this sample of 300 companies.
2. Identify the variables and their types and scales of measurement. Is the data time series
or cross-sectional? Please explain.
3. Provide a table in which you summarise the complete descriptive statistics on ‘stock
return’ and ‘firm size’ (including but NOT limited to measures of central location,
measures of variability, coefficient of variation (where applicable), etc.).
4. Prepare two bar charts to represent the frequency distribution of stock exchanges and
industries graphically.
5. Develop tables to provide joint information on:
a. Stock exchanges and average stock return.
b. Different industries and average stock return.
6. Graphically demonstrate the output of Question 5.
7. Provide a scatter plot and correlation analysis for
1
a. Stock return and firm size
b. Stock return and past return
c. Stock return and past trading volume
What insights can be gained from these analyses?
8. Are your results consistent with the research findings in the related literature? What are
your recommendations to investors in the U.S. stock market?

Introduction
The introduction has three parts:

purpose of the report: tell the reader why the report is being produced
limitations: any limitations encountered in the production of the report that may affect the results
of the report
the scope of the report: summarise what the report covers, how information will be presented in
the report, where the information for the report comes from and how it will be gathered (e.g.
questionnaires or other research). Be careful here once again not to simply reproduce the table of
contents; this should be an overview or summary of what will be done, not a bit-by-bit
reproduction. Focus on the important elements.
Body of report
The structure of the body of the report is directed by the assessment item. Consider the case questions and
structure this section using headings and subheadings to convey the report content. In the table of
contents above, an example structure is provided for another report topic.
Conclusions
This section should essentially summarise the main points or findings of the report. It should be based on
the information presented in the body. It is essential that you do not introduce any new information or
ideas at this stage and the use of direct quotations should be avoided. The conclusion should answer the
question: what do the findings mean?
It is important to ensure that your conclusions are consistent with the outline given in the introduction. For
this reason, it is generally recommended that the introduction be written after the main report. The
conclusion should answer the following questions. Was the purpose of the report fulfilled? Have the
specified sources of information been used? Have the areas stated been adequately tackled?
