Description
1. Following are some reflection questions to guide Discussion 1:
What types of leaders are needed to work in this kind of a field?
What generational differences might play a factor in the type of leaders best suited for these new kinds of challenges?
What kinds of things do students need to do to best prepare themselves for this field?
Healthcare is complex, lines of authority are often not clear, and leadership in the field can be especially tough. What motivates people to seek leadership in this field?
The “Canyon” on page 15 of the textbook portrays the gaps between leaders and followers. Students can gain great insight into the Canyon and other aspects of it by exploring www.rootinc.com.
Students should use the following the self-evaluation questions to guide their initial post in the Unit 1 Discussion:
Do I view myself as a leader? If so, is my goal to bring about needed change or, in the words of one CEO, “to build palaces and monuments to my legacy”?
Do I view leadership as an act, a process, or a skill?
Do I (and other leaders I know) think that a leadership imperative exists today?
Have I observed any significant shifts and trends in the field and popular culture that affect leadership in my organization?
Does it seem more difficult to lead and manage change today and why?
2.The Quality Improvement in Healthcare video you watched this week introduces the Institute of Healthcare Model for Improvement. The website you reviewed expands on this model and also introduces the Plan-Do-Study-Act improvement tool. A list of the following eight fundamental topics associated with these models is provided on the website. (Introduction, Forming the Team, Setting Aims, Establishing Measures, Selecting Changes, Testing Changes, Implementing Changes, and Spreading Changes). Select one of these topics and briefly explain why you think it’s important in improving quality.
