MGMT 50199 – Leadership Development
GROUP PROBLEM-BASED ASSIGNMENT
It is your responsibility to read the assignment and follow the instructions.
The overall objective of this assignment is to analyze a movie as a leadership case. A movie allows you to see leadership
in action in “real time” and gives you the chance to recognize effective or ineffective leadership practices, and to apply
course material. Working in groups provides an opportunity for further exploring leadership issues during the course of
this project. There are three elements to this assignment and each of you will be given a chance to be a leader.
Applying the material from our class discussions, in-class activities and readings is a key component to the success of this
assignment. No online research is expected. A rubric is included. This is a graduate level course you are expected to
synthesize and analyze, not just list answers.
In class your group will select a movie from the list provided. Two groups cannot work with the same movie. Each group
member must pick a different character to analyze for their leadership during the movie.
Grades are issued throughout the process as well as for the final work product. Follow the instructions given in class as
well as on this document. The movie will be watched at least twice as you take notes of the minor and major events and
characters. You will analyze your character and their interactions during three main events: one at the beginning, middle
and toward end.
PART 1 – GROUP ASSIGNMENT REPORT – 20%

(5 of the
Group
Marks)
Executive Summary (Group) 1 page (hint: normally written after all other work is completed)
• Include the objective of the report.
• Provide an overview of the report so the reader knows what is included
• It should provide enough information to allow the reader to quickly become familiar with
the main material in the report without necessarily reading the entire report
2 (10 of
the
Group
Marks)
Introduction (Group) 2 pages (hint: this is written after the individual portions are completed
before the Executive Summary)
• BRIEFLY summarize the plot of the movie. Do not focus on the action or plot of the movie.
It is more so a situational analysis and core issue related to leadership. Introduce the focus of the
report and the characters analyzed with their traits summarized. You have three characters that
were analyzed and you are introducing the reader to report from that perspective.

Leadership Styles (Individual) 2-3 pages for each group member plus a visual graphic for the
analyzed portion. (hint: The report is in paragraph form; do not simply think you can go down
the list and answer the questions, that is not synthesizing the analysis.)
Identify and analyze one leader from the movie (it can’t be the same as your group member).
Each team member in their portion will ensure their name is beside the name of the character in
the sub-heading.
Remember you are using three key moments in time. Beginning, Middle and End of the Movie.
Information that must be analyzed and used in the research graphic as well as the written
paragraphs are included below:
Evaluate the leader using course concepts/material; and explain what you believe their
attributes are. Make sure to use all the items below: the three main strengths from
Strengths Finders, three main values from in-class assessment; and MBTI type.
• Within the above describe the context that made you believe that “this” kind of behaviour of
“this” character belongs to such a leadership style. Make detailed references to the movie
scenes and relate them to the course concepts/material taught (remember you must cite
the movie using APA). Analyze and describe the situation which led to the leadership role.
• Leadership is not only about success; it is also about the challenges faced by them. You need
to mention the difficulties that were faced by the leader and how they used their leadership
traits to overcome those difficulties.
What is graphics in research?
It is a way of visual display of information. A graphic is an effective way to present the written
word so it can visually be an aid during the reading. Think of the saying: “a picture is worth a
thousand words” a picture is often “saying” things that words could not as clearly or concisely
say. Ensure you have used a synthesis graphic (contains the visual contents that are associated
with a specific label).

PART 2 – GROUP ASSIGNMENT VIDEO PRESENTATION – 20%(10 MARKS GROUP; 10 MARKS INDIVIDUAL)
Content Preparation
•
•
•
Review the content of the report you created for Group Assignment Report.
o Introduction (Group)
Telling a story is always a good way to make a point. Start your presentation with a brief idea
about the story behind the movie.
o Body (Leadership Styles) (Individual Members)
o Conclusion (Reflection)
Collaboratively create a 5 to 7 minutes presentation that reflects your Report.
o Remember that you will need to adapt the content of the report to an appropriate structure for a
presentation. Do NOT attempt to replicate the report in presentation form.
o Prepare slides that visually support all of your presentation’s key points.
The visual support for your presentation should be attractive, effective, and readable, and
support all of your content’s main points and key details.
The material on your slides should be short and concise and visually match your speech, no
paragraphs! Each slide should have a title. There should be NO slides with paragraph words on
them.
There should be approximately 10 slides. Slides are: Cover, Introduction, Character 1 (2 slides), Character 2 (2
slides), Character 3 (2 slides), Reflection, Thank you.
Presentation Delivery
•
•
•
•
•
•
Presentations will be delivered via video-recorded PowerPoint (5-7 minutes) saved as an MP4.
Each presenter should record their section in order, using a webcam and microphone using PowerPoint.
Your final presentation must include one of you, on camera, presenting each slide. See Video-Recorded
PowerPoint Instructions
Prepare point-form notes, if desired. Do NOT prepare a script or memorize your content. Natural,
conversational yet professional, delivery is very important.
Participation must be balanced and equal. Thus, in the team, each member should speak for an equal amount
of time. Practice the whole presentation as a group to check for timing and transitions.
The theme of presentation and slides should flow; it should not appear as if individual parts were put together.
