Dimensions of difference include race, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, class, and ability, and the intersecting complexities of these dimensions of difference. Clinical social workers understand that intersectionalities from group memberships means that life experiences may include oppression, poverty, marginalization, and alienation from self and society, which can lead to health and mental health issues as well as limiting access to resources, opportunities, and power. Clinical social workers recognize the importance of cultural humility, including acknowledging clients as experts of their own lives, and use self-reflection to understand power dynamics and their own relationship to privilege and oppression in the therapeutic alliance.
