Description
Research, Synthesis, and Audience Report: Adapting Content for Audience
Writing Situation: The College of Nursing and Health Professions is holding an informational health fair for the Valparaiso community. The goal of this health fair is to inform non-medical community members about preventable diseases and illnesses. Participants will walk through the halls of LeBien and view different research-based posters about common illnesses and diseases.
Your role: Your professor has seen how you collect and disseminate information that is suitable for the target audience–she thinks you would be a great addition to the team in charge of setting up this event! CONHP needs you to collect research on one illness or disease (osteoporosis) so that a graphic designer can translate the information into an infographic to be viewed by community members.
Writing Task: Create an informational packet to send to a graphic designer who will be creating an infographic about the topic you choose. Your audience, the graphic designer, does not have medical knowledge and needs to understand the background, symptoms, and preventions of this disease/illness in order to communicate the information to participants, a group that we can also assume does not have much medical knowledge, at the health fair. Your audience, the graphic designer, also does not have the time or bandwidth to read through every article you send.
You must research, synthesize, and adapt existing information for a new audience.
Genre and Format: For this assignment, you will create 3 components in 3 steps:
Step one: Create a 3-source, 2-page annotated bibliography of academic articles related to the topic of your choice. View the template here.
These sources should be aimed at practitioners, not laypeople (it is your job to adjust the content and summarize the information in a way that the target audience can understand)
Under each source, write a description of the article and how this supports the steps of prevention that you are recommending. View the template for additional instructions.
Step two: Write a 500-700 word essay that combines the information from the three sources and recommends evidence-based best practices of prevention (citing sources responsibly). The target audience of this paper is the community members.
Step three: Write a brief memo to the graphic designer explaining the contents of the packet and the overall goal of the poster. Example of an overall goal: “To educate community members on the effects of Long COVID and inform them on how to identify and treat the symptoms.”
More on annotated bibliographies in class and here.
Audience: Your primary audience for this assignment is the graphic designer who does not have a background in healthcare. Your secondary audience for this assignment is the Valparaiso community members who are interested in preventing diseases and illnesses. Use a professional tone for each set of materials.
