DUE:
○ 02/29 (Thursday). Finish drafting all the deliverables and submit them on the Blackboard by 11:59 pm.
○ 02/03 (Sunday). Submit the final draft on the Blackboard by 11:59 pm.
INCLUDE: resume, cover letter, and job analysis
VALUE: 200 points
GENRE: Career documents
Project Goals
This project emphasizes document design, professional ethos, and perspective-taking as rhetorical strategies. This
project will help you identify your personal, professional, and academic strengths and consider ways of representing
them in various professional situations. The components in this unit are also designed to encourage you to identify
new areas of potential growth and development. Your final deliverables should function as a cohesive and
complimentary set of documents that can serve as your entry point into industry and professional positions. The
ultimate goal is to understand the professional persona you seek to inhabit and present to the world as you
matriculate into the workplace.
While the deliverables for this assignment should be tailored to a specific professional position or occasion, your set
of professional documents can serve as ‘parent documents’ or starting points for a variety of future uses. Each
application has a specific audience and therefore must address rhetorical questions of purpose, genre, and
exigence. Resume design requires iterative thinking, meaning, in multiple versions, revising and reflecting often on
the specific goals of a document rather than considering these documents as generalized or generic static
documents that work in all settings.
Outcomes
By the end of this project, you will learn:
● Appropriate Design and Document Formatting: this includes applying theories of design for particular
audiences, occasions., and media.
● Logical Visual Hierarchy: how to make and highlight major points using bullet points, underlining, color,
negative space, or boldface font.
● Organization: how to organize content for specific genres; how to organize a set of documents effectively
that respond to a specific occasion.
● Rhetorical and Modal Awareness: how to tailor professional documents for a particular audience, position,
and situation.
● Craft persuasive and convincing content by developing a professional persona suited to the occasion,
including how to highlight selling points for your audience and how to leverage non-verbal elements in your
documents to project your professional ethos.
Deliverables
There are several components to this assignment:
1) Job Analysis (50 points)
Research a current job or similar position announcement and prepare an analysis memo in which you
identify the position, the company, the workplace culture, ethos, and history. What are the job duties and
2)
3)
requirements? What steps are involved in the application process? If you would like to write about how this
job is an appropriate fit for you, feel free to do so. Please include a copy of the job or position
announcement.

Resume (75 points)

Letter

Resume
(75
points)
Advanced
(65-75)
Cover letter is composed using a
professional format and design.
Authors introduce a clearly
defined professional persona
and situate it as well-suited for
the rhetorical situation. The
content and visual appearance
of the letter are organized and
presented in a recognizable
business genre. The letter
demonstrates the author’s
rhetorical awareness and
specificity of the position and
the content document is both
persuasive and convincing.
Resume is written for a clearly
identifiable position and is
tailored to appeal to a particular
audience. Document format is
consistent and demonstrates
intentional design choices.
Information is organized to
communicate succinctly but
with sufficient detail to be
persuasive and compelling. The
resume evinces a strong case,
either overtly or tacitly, that the
applicant is a superior candidate
for the position.
Advanced
(41-50)
Job
Analysis
(50
Points)
Position analysis clearly
identifies details, expectations,
and requirements for a specific
professional position. Analysis
might include background
information on the
company/institution ethos or
general information about the
field. Position announcement is
included with the analysis.
Proficient
(55-64)
Cover letter is composed
using some organizational
elements, but clear
introduction, body, and
conclusion paragraphs are
not clearly defined.
Document design and format
may include elements that
are distracting or
non-conventional and are not
acknowledged in the process
memo. The letter may be
situated too generically or
may be written for a position
other than the one identified
in the position analysis.
Content is marginally
persuasive.
Resume is written for some
position; however, the
specificity of the position
might be ambiguous in
places. The resume might be
written for a “general”
audience. Document design
is generally consistent and
demonstrates intentional and
principled design but might
include elements that are
unnecessary or distracting.
Template and automated
design elements might be
apparent.
Proficient
(30-40)
Developing
(45-54)
Cover letter is composed with
missing structural components,
or some sections are
significantly underdeveloped
and provide insufficient detail
for the professional context.
Elements of document design
might be seriously distracting
or contribute to an
unprofessional ethos. The
recipient of the letter is
undefined, or the content of
the letter is not tailored to
address the recipient. Content
might be convincing in some
places, but offsetting or unclear
in others.
Underdeveloped
(0- 46)
Cover letter is composed
without any standard
organizational format.
Elements of document
design might be so
distracting that they
interfere with the
reader’s ability to
comprehend. A letter
that serves merely to
“cover” the resume (eg.
‘please see my resume
attached’) is
underdeveloped.
Resume is not written for a
clearly identifiable position.
Document design might be
inconsistent, conflicting, or
seriously distracting. The
organization of the document
might interfere with readability.
The document is composed
with effort but would likely be
read as minimally persuasive or
convincing in a professional
context.
Resume is absent or
incomplete.
Unprofessional tone,
language, or style might
make the document
off-putting. If a template
is used, “filler” material
might remain. Little or no
evidence of effort to craft
document design and/or
organization is present.
Developing
(20-29)
Underdeveloped
(0- 19)
Position analysis identifies
important details,
expectations, and
requirements for a specific
professional position. Some
additional analysis might be
included, but the details and
significance of this position
are not communicated
clearly enough for readers to
draw conclusions about how
the resume and cover letter
match the position.
Position analysis partially
identifies details, expectations,
and requirements for a specific
professional position. Little to
no additional analysis is
provided. Position
announcement might not be
included with the analysis.
Position analysis is
absent or might be
written for a general
class of positions rather
than a for a particular
announcement. Position
announcement might
not be included with the
analysis.

Federal Bureau of Investigations
1 Justice Park Dr
Houston, TX, 77092
Dear Mrs. Nguyen,
I recently came across the job ad that was posted on LinkedIn regarding becoming a special
agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigations in Houston Texas. I am sharing my resume and
cover letter for this specific job application and do believe I am the best candidate for you. As
shown on my resume, I have years of experience in customer service and the food industry
which has allowed me to make strong connections with people in my community.
I have many qualifications for this job, not only my bachelor’s degree in criminology criminal
justice, but with my prior work experiences as well. As a student that will graduate from Sam
Houston State University in 2024, I have learned an abundant amount of knowledge and wisdom
from each professor that I had. A lot of these professors had prior work in the criminal justice
system whether it being corrections, as an officer, etc. This has allowed me to learn what is
necessary to fill this spot for the application. With my work experience I have learned numerous
things like learning how to accommodate people, resolve solutions with customers and/or
employees peacefully, and comply to stick standards and procedures. I have acquired many
different skills in this area to recognize and resolve issues in the workplace. With this as well, I
have advanced my communication skills throughout my job experiences and working in a
professional setting with a team. I have a passion for helping people and doing what is right. I
want to make the world a better place not only for me but my community and future generations
as well.
Throughout my job experiences I have learned and acquired a skillset that I believe will excel me
for this job. I always like to face challenges head on and exceed expectations that are given to
me. I hope that I will be hearing back from you soon and I appreciate your consideration of my
application. If you have any questions or need to follow up please email me at any time at
[email protected] or 402-214-9474.
Sincerely,
James Frasca
Ranger Guard & Investigations Job Analysis
Job ad link: Ranger Guard & Investigations Careers and Employment | Indeed.com
1. What is the company website’s URL? https://www.rangerguard.net
2. Who is your main contact person in the company? What is his/her title? The main
contact for this company is the support group staff by call or email. There is no main
person to contact.
3. How long has your job ad been posted? The job ad has been posted on Indeed.com
for 3 days.
4. What is the history of the company? The company was founded in 2009 by an
experienced security professional, Assaf Catran. As he has held many types of
positions regarding security, he understands the importance of providing the highest
levels of security for every client. Since then, the company has grown to be one of the
most dependable security agencies in the Houston area. Determined to set the highest
standards in the private security industry, the company has made professionalism and
protection their top priorities.
5. What is the mission of the company? The mission of the company is to maintain high
levels of security for its clients. Whether guarding against potential terrorists,
disgruntled employees, robberies, or other incidents, the mission prioritizes welltrained, professional security.
6. What is your first impression of the company, i.e., how do they present themselves to
you as a prospective employee; what’s the corporate persona and ethos? The first
impression I got from the company was that they prioritize professionalism. Their
website has a strong design and is organized in a way that I can find out what training
will be provided, the job opportunities, benefits, the company’s mission, its history,
and more. There also seems to be a priority for uniformity within the company. When
looking at the pictures provided, I see clean company cars and individuals in clean
uniforms. As a prospective employee, I can see that the company takes its mission
seriously, which is an important thing to look for when applying for a job. The
corporate persona and ethos show that this company provides its high-standard
security services by maintaining a proactive, community-based approach to
identifying crime threats and risks. The company wants to set higher standards for the
security industry.
7. What will your job duties be? Before getting my first station, I must be able to take
training courses to be efficient in the job. This could include law enforcement training
and tactical training. After training, my duties may include guarding a mall or
apartment complex, providing mobile patrol services, loss prevention for retail or
manufacturing facilities, or even providing security services at special events such as
concerts or football games. The main responsibilities will be to patrol premises
regularly to maintain order, monitor and authorize entrance of vehicles or people into
the property, remove wrongdoers from the area, secure entrances and exits, check
surveillance cameras, investigate suspicious activity, respond to alarms, aid people in
need, apprehend and detain perpetrators according to the legal protocol before the
arrival of authorities, and submit reports daily.
8. What kinds of qualities do you need to have to be successful in this job? An important
quality needed is the willingness to work long shifts during weekends, holidays, or
overnight, depending on your posted area. Other qualities include having knowledge
of legal guidelines for area security and public safety and being able to report in
writing. Workers must be able to be prepared to handle a variety of situations quickly.
Another important quality is always maintaining professionalism throughout the job.
Maintaining professionalism helps you and the company’s reputation as a reliable
security agency.
9. Where is the job located? Would you be willing to move? The job is in Conroe and
The Woodlands, Texas. The job will not require me to move because it is already
located near where I reside. If the job required me to move, I probably would not
because of financial reasons.
10. Why do you want this particular job? I want this job because it will be close to where
I live. This company seems more professional than others and has positive ratings.
This job also has accessible training regarding tactics, law enforcement, and being
able to react in tough situations. This job is easily accessible to an individual who has
a high school diploma and no criminal record. There are also many opportunities for a
security officer, such as performing different types of jobs in different types of
locations. This job is a good stepping stone to what I plan to do after I graduate from
university, which is to be a commissioned officer in the United States Army. The
training and experience that are provided by this job could relate to my journey of
becoming an Army officer as I may learn how to respond in different situations. I also
like that this job can be mostly performed outside. I have always been the type of
person who prefers to work outside, performing tasks that could help the community,
instead of working inside an office all day. Another reason why I would want this job
is that there is a high demand for security officers in the area where I currently live.
This job has more hiring opportunities because not many individuals want to work as
security guards.
Summary:
The Ranger Guard & Investigations company ethos is to set out to do better and set higher
standards for the security industry. The company provides exceptional security services by
maintaining its proactive, community-based approach to identifying crime threats and risks. The
company provides security that may involve different types of tasks depending on the client. The
job requires employees to be able to understand law enforcement and to be able to react quickly
to situations.
The important thing when tailoring my documents is to make sure that they are relevant to the
job that I am applying for. The way I plan to tailor my job documents to the company’s needs is
by emphasizing more of my critical thinking skills, such as my ability to react to situations and
think professionally. Emphasizing my learning and leadership capabilities is also important, as
the company will most likely not want people who cannot show these qualities. My time
volunteering with law enforcement and my path to be a US Army officer could also be
mentioned. Since this job is also about community, I can emphasize my ability to work with the
community, as I have many volunteer hours that have helped different communities in different
ways. While I have never worked in law enforcement, it is important to highlight other positions
that I have held.

3 (Developing) The email addresses important issues facing minority neighborhoods in Houston related
to flooding and increased death rates. The writer makes a reasonable case for why these
issues need to be addressed. The layout and structure of the email are easy to follow,
with an introduction, explanations of each issue, and a conclusion. However, several
areas require attention to improve clarity, coherence, and professionalism.
3 (Developing) The email addresses important issues facing minority neighborhoods in Houston related

issues need to be addressed. The layout and structure of the email are easy to follow,
with an introduction, explanations of each issue, and a conclusion. However, several
areas require attention to improve clarity, coherence, and professionalism.
Summative Notes (write 4-5 overall feedback):
1. The email fails in clarity and structure. The email lacks clear organization and structure, making it difficult
to follow the writer’s main points. Consider breaking the content into paragraphs with distinct topics (e.g.,
one paragraph for flooding issues, another for increased death rates) to enhance readability.
2. The email needs more focus on grammar and proofreading. There are numerous grammatical errors and
awkward phrasings throughout the email that detract from its professionalism. For example, “many deaths
or homeless people are increasing within of the neighborhoods of minority” should be revised to “the number
of deaths and homelessness is increasing within minority neighborhoods.” Proofreading for grammar and
punctuation errors is essential to convey credibility and competence.
3. The email needs more supporting evidence. While the email mentions the consequences of flooding and
increased death rates, it lacks specific evidence or statistics to substantiate these claims. Providing data or
examples would strengthen the writer’s argument and lend credibility to their concerns.
4. The email needs to improve on tone and professionalism. The tone of the email is somewhat informal and
could be perceived as accusatory or demanding. To enhance professionalism and increase the likelihood of a
positive response, consider adopting a more respectful and diplomatic tone. Additionally, addressing the
recipient as “Mayor Whitmire” rather than “Mayor of Houston Whitmire” would be more appropriate.
5. The email should have a call to action. The email concludes with a vague request for the recipient to contact
the writer, but it lacks a specific call to action or proposed next steps. To improve effectiveness, clearly
articulate what actions the writer is requesting the recipient to take (e.g., scheduling a meeting to discuss
potential solutions and allocating resources for flood mitigation projects). Providing a clear call to action
increases the likelihood of a constructive response and demonstrates proactive engagement with the issue.
