Writing Question

Description

ONLY IF YOU HAVE READ OR WILL READ THE NOVEL MY SOUL TO KEEP! I have noted elsewhere that Alex’s nickname for Dawit is “The Brother from Another Planet,” and it suggests that “if Jessica was not blinded by her desire for Dawit, she would realize that skin color, hair texture, and beauty cannot overcome the differences between her and Dawit…. Thus, while the term ‘brother’ implies a familial bond between Dawit and African Americans that transcends history, ideology, and geographical boundaries, the words ‘another planet’ indicate that Dawit’s blackness is strange, foreign, out of place” (Jenkins 66-67). Given this context, write an essay that examines Tananarive Due’s My Soul to Keep (1997) to answer one of the following questions:According to the novel, is there more to being Black than having a Black body?According to the novel, what is Blackness, and does that definition support or reject the idea that Blackness is a paradox?According to the novel, does one need to be religious or spiritual to be considered authentically Black? While you may reference popular sources, your essay must reference a minimum of three peer-reviewed books or articles, and at least one of those sources must come from the scholarship discussed in class. Your essay must also be five to six pages in length (around 1500 words), typewritten, and double-spaced, with 1-inch margins and 12-point font. In addition to these requirements, your citations and Works Cited page must be formatted according to MLA documentation style. Finally, late papers will only be accepted if they are accompanied by a credible and verifiable excuse. Good Luck!
