Reading Guide
Answer each question in 1–3 sentences inserted into this document below the respective question. 2pts each.
1. Read the first four paragraphs of this World History Encyclopedia article about the “Doctrine of
Discovery.” What was the Discovery Doctrine, and how did it authorize indigenous dispossession?
2. How did colonists use the mechanisms of debt and foreclosure to dispossess the Native peoples?
3. How did this process of debt creation and foreclosure contribute to the process of racialization?
4. On page 34, Park says:
The dynamic and ongoing process of racialization, this history suggests, developed through the
interplay between racial practices and racial ideas. Indeed, the racial divide in colonists’
practices appears to have preceded and presaged their specific ideological elaboration of the
racial justifications for these practices.
What does this passage mean, and how does it suggest that debt creation and racialization are
connected?
5. How did the colonists’ treatment of the Native people differ from their treatment of other colonists? That
is, how did they create a “two-track economic system”? Why was the practice of “racial foreclosure”
later expanded to the general population?
Your answers should be in 12-point Times New Roman font with 1-inch margins, double-spaced, and submitted
