Summary of Results Clark Healthy
Workplace Inventory
Identify two things that
surprised you about the
results. Also identify
one idea that you
believed prior to
conducting the
Assessment that was
confirmed.
What do the results of
the Assessment suggest
about the health and
civility of your
workplace?
The Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory rating of 80 to 89 is considered a moderately healthy workplace
(Clark, 2015). My organization is moderately healthy because it scored 87. The organization scored highly
in key areas such as teamwork and collaboration, employee motivation, effective communication, and
conflict resolution. Transparency and trust among workers also contributed to the high score. Nonetheless,
the workplace environment did not perform well in paying workers benefits, remuneration, and
compensation. The organization also scored average scores on workload allocation because a shortage of
workers causes burnout and turnover.
First, I was surprised by the results because I realized that my workplace was not as healthy as I had
contemplated before taking inventory. Thus, I realized that the workplace needs to improve in some areas.
Secondly, it was surprising that the areas I had overlooked contributed to a moderately healthy workplace
and could be improved to bring a very healthy workplace.
The results confirmed that teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication in the organization play
a critical role in creating a very healthy workplace.
The results indicate that my workplace is moderately healthy because the overall scores were 87. The
health and civility of my workplace are favorable, but there is a need to improve some areas to achieve a
very healthy workplace. Trust, transparency, teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication
contribute to the favorable health and civility of my workplace.

General
Notes/Comments
The concept illustrated in the article by Broome & Marshall (2021) is transformational leadership. The
article indicates how nurses can integrate transformational leadership to motivate other nurses in healthcare
settings to improve performance, patient safety, and overall health outcomes. The article by Clark (2019)
demonstrates the importance of fostering a civility culture to establish a healthy and civil workplace
environment. Thus, nurses should create trust and civility to eliminate uncivil, disrespectful, and negative
behaviors.
First, the nurse leaders in my workplace apply transformational leadership to motivate other employees,
thus contributing to teamwork and collaboration. Secondly, my workplace embraces a culture of civility
through transparency, trust, and respect to eliminate uncivil behaviors that negatively affect the overall
Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory scores.
The workplace can use transformational leadership to inspire and motivate workers. For example, nurse
leaders can apply transformational leadership to ensure workers are well-remunerated and compensated.
Also, the culture of civility can be used in the organization to ensure nurses are not subjected to harsh
working conditions that increase turnover and burnout. Hiring more nurses could help eliminate some
uncivil behaviors depicted by nurses facing work-related stress and burnout.
Although the organization has maintained a moderately healthy workplace, it is essential to improve the
weak areas to create a conducive and civil workplace environment for workers. Ensuring the organization
has a very healthy workplace is critical to improve productivity, performance, and job satisfaction. Based
on the results, my organization should focus on a continuous improvement plan to achieve a very healthy
workplace.

Workplace Environment Assessment
Clark, C. M. (2015) argues that civility in the workplace is essential in creating a
conducive environment for employees. Based on my Work Environment Assessment results, my
workplace is civil in several areas that contribute to high performance and productivity. First, the
workplace is civil because it embraces teamwork and collaboration. Thus, nurses work with
interdisciplinary care teams to share their ideas and skills to improve overall health outcomes.
Secondly, the workplace is civil because there is effective communication among team leaders,
nurse leaders, and staff. Effective communication increases interpersonal relationships in the
workplace. The workplace is civil because employees embrace core values such as transparency,
respect, and trust when performing their roles.
Nonetheless, my workplace is uncivil because the nurse-to-patient ratio is unfavorable,
thus forcing nurses to work long shifts that increase burnout, work-related stress, and turnover.
When nurses face fatigue in a workplace environment, they develop uncivil and disrespectful
behaviors to demonstrate their frustrations. The workplace is not civil due to the inadequate
allocation of resources to compensate nurses who work overtime to reduce staff shortage gaps.
Thus, the workplace needs to increase remunerations, benefits, and compensations to motivate
the employees extrinsically.
Lastly, I experienced incivility in the workplace several weeks ago. Two nurses engaged
in a dispute when a patient developed an adverse drug reaction. The nurses blamed each other for
the negative health outcomes. The dispute resulted in verbal abuse, thus creating a bad reputation
for our organization. However, the hospital management addressed the incivility by taking
disciplinary actions against the two nurses. They were suspended for three months and instructed
3
to undergo training on effectively handling clinical issues without violating ethical principles of
nursing practice.
