There is great responsibility in conducting research and handling data. Transparency is part of this ethos. Researchers or prospective researchers are responsible for ensuring that they are conducting research for the right reasons and with proper research aptitude. When considering the role of the researcher, it is helpful to reflect on what it means to conduct research. This reflexivity allows for clarity of the researcher’s positionality.
Overview
The purpose of this final assessment is to develop your own subtopic within the broader topic selected for this quarter. You will compose a research proposal outline using the resources from our course and any other articles you find to support your subtopic. You may take either a qualitative or quantitative approach.
Use one of the following templates to explore the subtopic you are proposing and complete all the research characteristics that are reflected in each of the PowerPoint slides:

Please leave all subheadings in the PowerPoint slides and build your content under those subheadings. Use a sentence-style outline and be sure to explain your points clearly. Also, be sure to use cited support throughout the outline. Once completed, this template can serve as a guide for your own research proposal project in the future.
Instructions
This assessment requires that you use your accumulated knowledge about the elements of research. In this final assessment, create a proposal for how you might study the topic selected for you, either qualitatively or quantitatively.
A PowerPoint template has been provided for you to outline your ideas. Each slide has a major heading that focuses on the given research component. The major headings are accompanied by subheadings that signal the main points to be addressed. As this is a PowerPoint presentation, you are not asked to provide a full narrative, but rather clear and concise bullet points in brief sentence style demonstrating your understanding of each aspect of the plan. Please use accurate APA style and format for this assessment including citations and references. Detailed instructions for this assessment are embedded in the Power Point template. Please follow the instructions and remove the instructions from the final assessment submission.
You may want to use the articles provided for the first two assessments. You should also use the course textbook and any additional scholarly sources you choose to support your proposal. See Program Library Research Guides, Reviewing the Literature, and Library Help for guidance.

the topic/research problem to be researched. It sets up the context, relevance and aims of the project. It should tell the
audience a) what is already known about a topic/target population[with cited support], and b) what is unknown about a
topic/target population [what is unknown is the gap in literature]. This paragraph should include 3-5 sentences and cited
support from scholarly literature.
• Purpose of the Study
• Embedded tips for success (please remove them prior to submission): The purpose statement is meant to inform the
audience of the purpose of the study. In every research study, the primary purpose is to answer the research question. The
language of the purpose statement should align with the research question. Guidance for formulating the purpose
statement for quantitative studies is on p.126 in the Creswell and Creswell (2023) text.

• Research Question(s) and hypotheses

research problem. Quantitative research questions are specific questions that can be answered by conducting statistical
analysis. Quantitative research question key words: effect, affect, relationship, cause, difference, predict, correlate, etc. The
format for quantitative research questions is in the Creswell and Creswell (2023) text on p.144. Please note the null and
alternative hypotheses in this section of the proposal. Null: The null hypothesis states that there is NOT statistical
significance between two variables. Alternative: The alternative hypothesis states that there is a statistical significance
among variables. Both hypotheses should use identical language. The only word that should be different is the word “not”.
Both hypotheses should be worded to align with research question(s).
• Theoretical Perspective
• Embedded tips for success (please remove them prior to submission): Quantitative studies are developed
based on a specific theory or theories [aka theoretical framework, theoretical lens, theoretical perspective].
This section should briefly describe the theory you have selected to use for your proposal. The actual theory
should be cited and any descriptive information you provide should also include cited support. This paragraph
should explain how the selected theory is relevant to the research problem/question/purpose.

must be 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an online program)

to measure a construct (e.g., the Grit Scale to measure grit) . Variables consist of the independent and dependent variables. These
should be labeled as IV= [name of variable] and DV= [name of variable]. Materials can consist of any materials you may have created
or used in the data collection process (e.g., a survey, demographics questionnaire, etc.)

how you collected the data (e.g., mailed out surveys, online surveys, etc.). When possible, use cited support for your

considerations. Please do not write “There are no ethical considerations.”

findings from past peer-reviewed research studies that are similar to your proposed study lead to what you may expect to find from your
own data collection if the study was actually conducted. Do not use dissertations or websites as sources for your proposal. This section
should have cited support from at least three other scholarly sources. The paragraph should be at least 4-5 sentences in length. Remember
that this research is proposed. It hasn’t occurred yet meaning all of the language of the proposal should be in future tense.

study statement for a qualitative research study is found in the Creswell and Creswell (2023) textbook on page 125 to help
you formulate the purpose statement for your study.

that indicates the specific phenomenon or experience you want to examine/understand using the language of qualitative research.
Assistance with wording for the qualitative research question can be found in the Creswell and Creswell (2023) textbook on page 147148. Be sure to make sure your question doesn’t use “quantitative wording”. If you are concerned, reach out to the teaching team for
guidance.

• Qualitative Design

this quarter (descriptive method, grounded theory, phenomenology, narrative, ethnography, generic qualitative inquiry, or case
study). Discuss why the qualitative design best aligns with your proposed study, along with cited support. This paragraph should be at
least 3-5 sentences in length.
• Role of the researcher
• Embedded tips for success (please remove them prior to submission): Discuss the role of the researcher, specifically for qualitative
research. The role of the qualitative researcher is more than just “the instrument to collect data”. This paragraph should have cited
