Nurse practitioners work in combination with physicians to guarantee quality care to patients, as well as
reprice the role of primary care providers. The training that is required for nurse practitioners include
either a Master of science in Nursing degree, or a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. An MSN degree is
completed after a nurse finishes their BSN, and takes 2 additional years to achieve. A DNP degree
however, takes 3 to 4 additional years if the nurse already acquired a BSN degree. I believe this level of
training is sufficient in order to become a competent nurse practitioner, since they do have to complete a
vast amount of clinical hours for the program.
An article by the National Library of Medicine states that the Florida Board of Nursing is a regulatory
body that ensures individuals are qualified to practice nursing in the State of Florida in several vital ways,
such as licenses, disciplines, educates, monitors, and rehabilitates (Toney-Butler & Martin, 2023). These
are the standards that nurses and nurse practitioners should be held to, in order to attain exceptional
patient care. By establishing Laws such as the Nurse practice Law, nurse practitioners are held
accountable for their way of executing tasks. This is essential to certify that nurse practitioners comply
with the ethics that are involved in the profession.
For all of these reasons, I believe that the nurse practitioner program should be more stringent than the
RN level. An article by nurse.org states that NPs are healthcare providers who can prescribe medication,
examine patients, order diagnostic tests, diagnose illnesses, and provide treatment (Oppenheimer &
Brusie, 2023). Since Nurse practitioners have more responsibilities than an RN, it is understandable that
their program would be more rigorous. Prescribing medications and diagnosing illnesses are duties that
RNs cannot do, and require more training that is provided in the Nurse practitioner program.

In an ideal world, restructuring nursing education would aim to create a comprehensive, adaptable, and
collaborative system. Health care is always changing and evolving. Thus, nursing education needs to be
able to adapt and develop to these changes.
There are many options for the level of education nurses can acquire. In an ideal world, I believe it is
beneficial to have some entry-level education or training before earning a degree in nursing or starting a
nursing program. However, It is important for prospective students to take the time to learn the
pathways and which pathway best suits their aspirations (Gleason, 2023).
In an ideal world, the general education requirements should be more nursing-focused. General
education courses provide exposure to multiple disciplines, which gives a good foundation for higher
learning (FNU,2023). Integrating critical thinking into these courses would be extremely beneficial to
allow students to start gaining the mindset needed in nursing.
With the many levels of nursing, it is important to remember in the health care setting that each level
will have different roles and perspectives based on the level of education they acquire. Each role will
integrate but it is important to have clear and well-defined nursing roles. “We have found a significant
change in the distribution of role conceptions which occurred after the nurses had experienced their first
year as registered nurses, and which did not occur during the educational process. This indicates that the
conceptions of the need for a more clearly defined nursing role are assimilated during work experience”
(Olsson & Gullberg, 2021).
Each level of education would contribute uniquely to the healthcare team. CNAs and PNs/VNs would
primarily assist in direct patient care under the supervision of higher-level nurses. ADNs and BSNs would
take on broader responsibilities in patient care, leadership, and coordination within healthcare teams.
Lastly, MSNs and DNPs/Ph.D. holders would function as advanced practitioners, educators, leaders, and
researchers, contributing to policy-making and advanced patient care (Gleason, 2023). Reimbursement
would ideally be tied to the level of education and scope of practice. Higher levels of education and
specialization would warrant higher compensation due to increased responsibilities, expertise, and the
ability to handle complex cases.
This model aims to create a seamless progression from basic caregiving to advanced practice, ensuring a
well-rounded and highly skilled nursing workforce capable of meeting diverse healthcare needs while
providing career growth opportunities.
