From Ramon Valle’s levels of culture on p. 45 in your books, pick a level 1
artifact (an explicit item from one of your subcultures, something that can be
seen). Some examples might be an item that represents your place in your
family, a religious item, sports equipment, musical instrument or clothing that
represents your ethnic heritage. If you are having trouble thinking of
something, go back to your intersectionality diagram and think of an item that
represents one of the subcultures you explained.
Take a picture of this item and write a 1 paragraph description of why this item
represents one of your subcultures. Submit this to the assignments dropbox.

Intersectionality
Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the term intersectionality.
Intersectionality is the concept that every person belongs to many different social groups (or cultural
identities) and being a part of those groups helps shape who they are, but also the oppression that they might
be subjected to.
Some examples of different cultural identities would be a child’s language, health, gender, music preference,
place in family, ethnicity, religious affiliation, hobbies, sexual orientation, hometown and sports.
As educators, it is very important for us to think about the whole student and not place them in one social box
like race or class.
Please think about the different social groups that you belong to. I would like you to choose 5 different
cultural identifies or social groups that you belong to and create a diagram that represents you. I have
included mine as an example. You can either delete my information and fill yours in, or complete yours on the
next page. Submit this to the assignments dropbox.
