MODELS OF CRISIS INTERVENTION
Social workers have many tools in their toolbox to engage with people experiencing
difficulty in their lives: active listening skills, open body language, reflection of feeling,
paraphrasing, and more. But, how does one put these tools together to effectively
deescalate and support someone in crisis in a timely manner? Without attention to
established crisis intervention models and tenets, the skills may be haphazardly applied
or actually make matters worse.
Crisis intervention models provide an evidence-based and systematic way to respond to
crises. In this Discussion, you examine such models and apply them to a specific crisis in
a healthcare setting.

on the various models, their elements, and their efficacy in healthcare settings.
Recall a healthcare setting of interest and consider the types of crises you
might see as a social worker in that setting.

Identify a specific crisis that you expect to see in your healthcare setting of interest.
Then, select the crisis intervention model you think would be most effective in
addressing the crisis in that healthcare setting. Describe the steps or elements of the
model and explain why the model would be the most effective in addressing the type of
crisis you identified.

CRISIS INTERVENTION
The Chinese translation of the word “crisis” paradoxically means danger and opportunity.
A patient in crisis is at a breaking point, and the other side of that point signifies the
opportunity for change. Medical social workers can help guide patients to that place of
opportunity by interrupting and reducing crisis reactions. In general, crisis intervention is
a brief treatment approach focusing on stabilizing the individual’s functioning. Education,
support, and guidance help people in crisis mobilize their inherent strengths and
resources to alleviate significant distress.
In this week’s Discussion, you explored models of crisis intervention and their
application. For this Assignment, you demonstrate such models in practice as you
respond to a patient in crisis.

this week’s Discussion on crisis intervention models.
View the Patient in Crisis video in the Learning Resources. Select one
patient to use for this Assignment. Then, consider how you would respond to
the patient as a medical social worker engaging in crisis intervention. What
models, skills, and techniques would you put into practice?

Include a transcript and/or edit closed captioning on your video to ensure that
your presentation is accessible to colleagues of differing abilities.
