Purpose
This assignment is designed to give students critical thinking and communication skills by critically analyzing sport
films and expressing how they relate to sport consumers, the sport industry, and society. After completing this
assignment, students will have skills related to:
• Using critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze and interpret sport films.
• Using communication to convey important information and ideas.
Task
Your task is to analyze a film by creating a graphic essay. This will be the hallmark assessment for the course.
Create a graphic essay analyzing the film you have selected. A graphic essay is an innovative way to present
ideas, analysis, and arguments using a combination of visuals, illustrations, photos, video, and text. The graphic
essay will contain the same elements of a written essay, but the medium for sharing the elements is more
flexible. This project can take the form of an infographic, poster, slideshow, webpage, video, or other creative
presentation technique. The advantage of this type of project is that it allows the creation of dynamic and
engaging presentation of ideas while encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and effective communication.
Your project should include the following:
Message – Provide an overview of the film’s main purpose and message. Make sure you concisely capture the
film’s main essence. Present insightful ideas and analysis rather than merely summarizing the film.
Impact – Illustrate the film’s impact related to either a) historical trends, b) societal issues and/or c) sports
business concepts.
Recommendation – Explain why you would recommend this film to others. Evaluate the film’s strengths
and weaknesses and consider how well it achieves its intended purpose or resonates with its target audience.
Tips
Refer to key points of the film – Make references to specific scenes and/or quotes from the film. These
references will help you illustrate symbolism, character motivations, or social commentary present in the film.
Compare to other films – As you make your points, you should compare the film to other films with
similar topics. By highlighting these connections, you can demonstrate your ability to analyze and synthesize
information, drawing on their knowledge and understanding of various contexts.
Be creative – Be creative in how you present your project by using imaginative ideas and methods. The use
of original interpretations, creative visual representations, or unconventional approaches to analysis can
demonstrate your ability to think critically and outside the box.
Be visual – Create a series of visual panels or frames that represent key scenes, moments, or themes from
the film. Use photos, illustrations, photographs, or any other visual medium that best suits your style.
