Digital Media and Citizenship

Prof. Mohamed El Marzouki
Midterm Paper:
Assignment Description
This assignment is designed to give students a space to reflect on the discussions and ideas we
have been covering in class thus far through a case study. The class has discussed different
approaches to defining and implementing the idea of citizenship and role of digital media
technologies in this process. For this assignment, I want you to choose a particular organization,
group, event, hashtag or movement that you will study through the critical, conceptual lens of
digital media and citizenship offered in class discussions and readings.
Every student will write a five-page report on how an activist group or civic organization uses
digital media technologies in their struggle for equality, justice, citizenship and/or rights. In
addition to describing the organization’s use of digital media for civic engagement, the paper will
also evaluate and critique such use in light of the concepts and arguments discussed in class or in
the course readings. The report will offer a case study of digital media use for civic and political
engagement. Read this example for inspiration: https://goo.gl/pjgfSg
Steps:
1. Identify. To build your case study, your first task will be to identify a group or an organization
that advocates for or works on an issue that is meaningful to you. Once you identify the group/
organization, start reading around their activities and their missions through primary and
secondary sources.
2. Examine. Your second step is to examine and document the group/organization’s media
presence and outreach. What media platforms does your organization use? How do they use it?
How is their media use structured/organized? For what purposes are digital media technologies
employed? What frameworks, editorial lines or perspectives seem to permeate their media use?
Are there specific patterns in media engagement/use?
3. Construct. After you have thoroughly researched the media presence of your organization/
group and how they are covered (written about) in academic and non-academic sources, begin
summarizing the main points, ideas, and/or argument from each source. Always attach a source
to each summary to facilitate referencing when you are writing the full paper. As you prepare
your summaries, think actively and thoughtfully about how they relate to some of the keywords,
concepts and ideas discussed in class and in the course readings and in other academic sources
that you have identified.
4. Write. Your paper should be clearly structured into three parts (introduction, body,
conclusion). Your introduction will have a strong attention grabber linked to a statement of the
significance of studying/analyzing the organization/group you have selected (i.e. so what? why
should the world care about your topic?). Your introduction should also have a strong and clearly
articulated thesis statement. The last element of your introduction is a preview statement that
outlines how the paper/argument will proceed after the introduction.
The body of the paper will supply background/contextual information about the organization/
group/movement that the paper focuses on. The body should then transition to a robust analysis
section that summarizes and analyses the role of digital media technologies in facilitating/
enabling the struggles and/or work of the group you have chosen to work on. The analysis
section must make connection to conceptual tools/frameworks from the course reading material
and from other academic and non-academic sources. While it should advance and support your
thesis statement, the analysis section must address such questions as, what definition(s) of
citizenship best fit the work of my case study? Which particular concepts and or dimensions of
citizenship help make sense of my case study? How does this group use digital media
technologies? What do media technologies allow this group to do-that perhaps they could not do
before?
Within the body, you may choose from three basic patterns of organization:

Write all the summary paragraphs first, followed by an analysis section;

Alternate between summary and analysis paragraphs so that each summary paragraph is
followed an analysis paragraph

Combine summary and analysis of in each single paragraph of the body.
Your conclusion will reiterate the main thrust of the paper and summarize the major takeaways
from the analysis portion. A creative clincher should provide a sense of closure and
psychological unity to the paper.
