2. Organizational culture is the way an office or business functions. It is what makes each business function and feel different from other businesses. It is vital to leaders because it determines how you will communicate (Mottet, & Beebe, 2013, pg. 38). Leaders must know and understand the organizational culture in which they work to lead others in the best way possible. This can be implicit or explicit in the way organizational culture is established. There are multiple ways in which this culture can be conveyed to someone new to the office.
The first type is the most obvious, written rules or policies. These explicit rules can be found in an employee handbook, for example, or in federal regulations. Another type is stories, which can be shared when you start a new job and get to know your coworkers. Most of the time, a person will spend the first day with you, introducing you to others and telling you the ins and outs. This usually includes their story about the best way to do things. Another type is metaphor, which can tell a lot about a workplace without explicitly giving names. It can also tell someone who might be in the workforce for the first time how the office functions by giving a simple example. In his blog post, Richard Nordquist describes this method of obtaining information best by saying, “The metaphor is a basic way in which human beings ground their experiences” (2019). Additionally, there are ceremonies in the motivation or initiation area of the workplace. These can be for getting a promotion or just starting your job, but they are great ways to mark a transition. The final one is décor. In modern times, you hear many examples of this in the tech or marketing industry where the office spaces are ‘open concept’ or, more recently, working from home. The physical look and layout of an office can significantly impact how employees work and how outsiders see the business.
