GEOG241 – Geography of Qatar
Poster project
Poster Project & Oral presentation (14%):
Selection of poster topics – The students can select any general topic related to geography in global perspective (population,
economics, weather &climate, forest or vegetation, climate change, migration, physical geography, agriculture etc.,). Their
study should be comparative e.g., if they select the topic population, they must compare two different time periods
and have to analyze these periods.
Elements of a Poster
The poster should include these elements:
Title
Author(s), with affiliations and emails
If the poster is a representation of a research study, then the following sections must be included:
Abstract
Background
Some Interesting Facts
Results & discussion (graphs/maps/tables/images or photos)
Conclusion
References
Poster design tips:
Students have to use Microsoft PowerPoint to design posters. They must begin by setting the page size to their
final poster size.
Use of large text (text should be at least 18-24pt; headings 30-60pt; title >72pt.)
Not to use more than 2-3 font styles overall
Use of fonts that are easy to read (such as Times New Roman, Garamond, and Arial)
Avoid jagged edges left-justify text within text boxes or fully justify blocks of text
Avoid too much text (no more than 800 words max) and undefined technical jargon (depending upon potential
audience)
Careful choice of colors and attention to contrast. If in doubt, dark print on light background is best. Remember –
some colorblind people cannot distinguish between red and green.
Organizing and aligning content with columns, sections, headings, and blocks of text
White space is important to increase visual appeal and readability (this is the “empty” space between sections,
columns, headings, blocks of text, and graphics).
Selective incorporation of charts, graphs, photographs, key quotations from primary sources, maps, and other
graphics that support the theme of the poster. It is best to avoid using tables of data.
Avoid fuzzy images; make sure all graphics are high-resolution (at least 300ppi) and easily visible
Include the QU logo
Edit the poster carefully for typographic or grammatical mistakes and image quality before the final print-out (use
the print-preview function)

Causes and Effects of Amazon Rainforest Deforestation
Name
[email protected]
ABSTRACT
RESULTS CHART
The effects of the deforestation of Amazon can be
far reaching and very significant on the precipitation
rates. Werth( 2002) stated that the Amazon
experienced a considerable drop in its total
precipitation when the forest was removed from a
simulation model. This shows that deforestation
does influence the surrounding weather and can
possibly lead to various degrees of alterations to the
surrounding plant and animal life.
Forests all around the world are significantly
important for life on Earth to persevere. Forests are
a storehouse for huge numbers of biodiversity and
the Amazon Rainforest is said to be the most
biodiverse place on Earth. Moreover, trees convert
carbon dioxide into oxygen for us to breathe.
Furthermore, forests are home to many plants that
scientists derive drugs from to cure illnesses. Also,
around 50 million people are believed to be
indigenous to forests. However, with so much
damage being done at an alarming rates, humans
are destroying the same nature that is crucial for
their existence and survival.
BACKGROUND
Deforestation is the act of clearing large areas of
trees. It can be done through a various number
of different activities. Some activities that are driving
the deforestation of the Amazon is cattle ranching
because of its low maintenance costs. (Butler, 2020)
Furthermore , governments are trying to alleviate
the over population of urban cities by incentivizing
relocating to the forest side. Moreover, commercial
farming and logging is contributing to the issue.
Deforestation has detrimental local and global
effects. There will be loss of habitat in the area
affecting the population of many species. Also, more
greenhouse gases will stay in the atmosphere.
Furthermore, there will be greater soil erosion and
which can lead to destruction of homelands of the
indigenous people.
Furthermore, Werth(2002) expressed that the
deforestation causing variations in latent heat
release. This in effect was reducing the precipitation
in the Dakotas and Midwest triangle region which
affected the agriculture productivity there.
The following chart shows that during 20002005 , cattle ranching accounted for the largest
percentage of deforestation and continues to
do so. By doing so, the natural landscape of
the Amazon is changing with increased areas
of flat lands.
Logging is very profitable for the local
companies, but it comes with a heavy price. .

In conclusion, the are numerous ways human
activity is causing the deforestation of the
Amazon. This in turn is affecting many aspects of
physical and human geography.
For example, there is soil degradation/erosion,
biodiversity loss, change in climate patterns,
affecting water supplies within and far away and
changing of the morphology of the Amazon. It is
also creating difficulties for the indigenous people
and destroying their livelihood.
To protect Amazon, countries must implement
strong policies and monitor intensively any illegal
activities. Areas that are deforested must be replanted and human activity must be reduced to
counter the negative effects.
We must act quickly before we destroy ourselves
with our own activities.

EFFECT OF DEFORESTATION
The effects of deforestation are surely known to
affect the environment and other things , but it
should be noted that it also impacts the public
health. Vasconcelos et al. (2001) mentioned that
wildlife in Amazon hosts many different types of
pathogens and some can be unknown too.
Therefore, there is always a constant threat to
human health in the event there is an outbreak.
More than 20 percent of the oxygen
worldwide comes from the Amazon, hence,
it is named as ‘Lungs of The Earth’.
Around 40,000 species of plants are found
in the Amazon.
CONCLUSIONS
Furthermore, the government of Brazil is trying
to alleviate its over population of urban cities by
sending people in areas near the forest leading
to subsistence farming , hence , adding to the
problem.
Some Interesting Facts!
Area of the forest spans a whopping
3.4million square miles which is a bit greater
than the size of half of USA.

The above map indicates that the country with
the greatest deforestation is Brazil. Gibbens &
Champine, (2019) expressed that this is largely
due to cattle ranching , mining and soy
production In 2018 alone , 1.3 million hectare
of tree cover was wiped off. Moreover, other
countries in South America are also
contributing to the issue but comparatively less
than Brazil. This map may still show much
greenery, however, at this rate of deforestation
much of the forest will be cleared. Also,
Considering wildfires in forests, more than 50%
of the forest wouldn’t survive past 2050.
(Amigo, 2020)
Deforestation and urbanization causes supply
shifts in food and water. Hence, it can force the
wildlife to migrate to areas near human
population. Furthermore, activities in the
Amazon puts the workers close to the wildlife
Mackenstedt et al. (2015). This can lead to
spillover of pathogens on the human species
which can be dangerous.
