Module learning outcomes
1.Knowledge and Understanding:
Discuss the concepts and theories underpinning strategic planning and its role in the success
of an organization.
2.Skills and Abilities:
Apply relevant analytical tools to evaluate the impact of external and internal environment on
a given firm’s competitive position and recommend appropriate competitive strategies within
the context of a dynamic competitive environment.
What am I required to do in this assignment?
This assessment carries a 50% weighting of the module grade. It has two components: Pair written Assignment (35%) and
individual viva (15%). You have to pass both the components to clear the Assessment.
Read the attached scenario and using appropriate data from varied sources, write a report (word limit 2500 +/- 10%, excluding
references) that addresses the following tasks:
1. A review on the need for and importance of environmental analysis by organiSations using recent and relevant academic
literature.
2. An evaluation of the trends in the macro environment that would influence the Oman Petroleum Industry using PEST Model.
3. An analysis of the attractiveness of Oman Petroleum Industry using Porter’s Five Forces Model.
4. Perform a SWOT analysis of PDO.
PDO UNVEILS ITS NEW PURPOSE AND STRATEGY
It’s difficult to discuss the energy sector within the Sultanate of Oman without mentioning Petroleum Development Oman LLC
(PDO). Founded in 1937 at the direction of Sultan Said bin Taimur, the business is one of the leading oil and gas exploration and
production companies in the GCC region overseeing an area of 90,000 square kilometres, or approximately one-third of Oman’s
geography. PDO operates around 200 oil fields, 55 natural gas fields, 9,000 active wells and maintains a national workforce of
more than 8,500 staff and 70,000 contractors.
PDO, majority-owned by the government, works closely with many local companies as well as international partners in the
efficient and safe exploration of Oman’s hydrocarbon reserves. Since 1937, PDO has worked towards transforming the country
into a net exporter of oil and natural gas. It boasts an enviable track record in locating and developing fields in complex geological
formations. PDO has been instrumental in boosting Omani oil production towards the million barrels per day mark. Recognized
globally for driving down the cost of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques, adopting lean continuous business improvements
and furthering research into the development of sustainable exploitation practices, PDO invests heavily in education and training
programmes aimed at developing skillsets and providing opportunities to all levels from school leavers through to PhD graduates.
The company is currently working with its partner Glass Point on constructing the 1GWth (gigawatt thermal heat) Miraah solar
facility, slated to start production later this year and the largest of its kind in the world. The plant will produce the steam – 6,000
tonnes per day – needed for thermal EOR at the Amal field in southern Oman. PDO is committed to the highest standards of
corporate governance. Management has consistently kept the company streamlined and agile in order to ensure optimum
returns from the country’s natural resources.
In recent years, PDO expanded its scope and moved towards becoming a fully-fledged energy company, with renewables and a
green agenda playing an increasingly important part. PDO plays an important part in the country’s economic expansion and
diversification, providing support in areas such as job creation and training, developing local expertise and promoting numerous
social investment programs. And to enable it to manage the various assets, resources and technologies that are required for its
non-hydrocarbon functions, the business contracted Carillion Alawi LLC to provide Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) across
its 12 locations.
In the early 2023, PDO unveiled its new corporate purpose and strategy, outlining how it will continue to serve Oman and deliver
value to the Sultanate in a rapidly changing and volatile energy landscape. The Company’s new purpose- “Building a sustainable
and low-carbon future to maximize value for Oman”- replaces its previous vision and mission which were established more than
ten years ago. It also refreshed its strategy giving a glimpse of its existing projects and future plans to generate sustainable
revenue for Oman today and in the low-carbon future. Explaining this, its Managing Director Steve Phimister said: “Maximising
value for Oman is at the heart of our Purpose, to fulfil our role in contributing to Oman’s Vision 2040 and Net Zero Emissions
2050. PDO is committed to both cost and carbon competitiveness – safely, efficiently and sustainably growing our core Oil and
Gas business whilst minimising emissions from our operations”
Under its new strategy, PDO aims to pioneer the new energy landscape, leading technology deployment, operational excellence,
decarbonisation and supply chain development for Oman’s oil and gas industry. Steve added: “Oil & Gas has a role in the global
energy system for decades to come, but hydrocarbon development must be sustainable. We have a responsibility to sustain the
current energy system whilst we build the new (low Carbon) energy system. PDO has bold plans to safely increase oil & gas
production whilst at the same time halving its emissions. And PDO is well-positioned, in partnership with others, to build
sustainable, low-carbon revenue streams for the future of Oman”

INSTRUCTIONS
Your work will be graded on the following aspects:
1. This assessment carries a 50% weighting of the module grade. It has two components: Pair written Assignment (35%) and
individual viva (15%). You have to pass both the components to clear the Assessment.
2. Your pair assignment shall reflect the depth and breadth of your original analyses in a clear and coherent manner.
3. Use of the relevant academic literature to support ideas and issues discussed. The range of academic sources such as texts
and journals to support your arguments and comments.
4. Any reference to authors and other writers shall be quoted with due acknowledgment in your assignment report using the
Harvard Referencing System. For details of Harvard referencing style refer to the student handbook page 44-45 sections 7.2.
3
5. The cover page should present the following details: Name of the student, The Programme, Module Title, Assignment Title,
and a number of words that must be reflected on the cover sheet.
6. All assignments must adhere strictly to the deadlines specified by Majan College. Failure to hand in the assignment for any
reason and without prior approval and a valid written extension from the module tutor will not be marked and will be
awarded a grade of G (0) irrespective of the quality of the work. See student handbook page 16 section 4.4.
7. Your report should be word-processed and professionally presented. The length of your report should be 2500 words (+/10%), presented in the text of font size 12 with 1.5 line spacing. Please state the exact word count at the end of the
assignment.

10. In this pair assignment, it is recommended that the group should identify a leader who can be responsible for uploading the
assignment on Turnitin and share the feedback received from lecturers with the pair member. (It is not applicable for referral
students, since referral students have an individual assignment and individual viva).
Additional Guidelines
1. The Assignment Submission link on MOVE will be open, a week ahead of the submission date.
2. You can submit your assignment multiple times, till the submission deadline. Note that Turnitin could take up to 24 hours
to produce similarity reports for submissions.
3. The last submission, within the deadline, will be considered as your final submission.
4. Assignments should be submitted by 23hrs 59mins on the day of the deadline. There is a grace period until midnight
to allow for any technical difficulties, but any assignments submitted after this will be counted as late. Technical
problems will not be accepted as an excuse for submitting after the day of the deadline.
5. The similarity percentage of your final submission will be one of the factors considered, for assessing the originality of
your assignment. However, the decision to report an assignment for plagiarism is taken by the Lecturers, who mark your
assignment.
6. The Lecturers will consider a number of factors such as Assignment type, Part of the assignment where similarity occurs,
Nature of similarity etc., along with the similarity percentage of your assignment, to assess the originality of your
assignment. Therefore, similarity percentage would not be accepted as a basis for disputing academic judgments
regarding plagiarism.
4
7. Note that the similarity percentage of your submission can change until the submission deadline if the submissions of
other students have similarities to your assignment. Therefore, the similarity percentages are not final, till the assignment
submission is closed.
